Last September 23, 2013, about 10,000 faithfuls and devotees flocked in the Parish and Shrine in San Pedro, Sto. Tomas Batangas for the feast of the Franciscan stigmatist, Padre Pio.
Padre Pio was born in Italy in 1887 and adopted the name Pio when he became Capuchin priest after Pope Pious V, the patron saint of Pietrelcino- his home city. Padre Pio, being the patron saint of the church was world famous for carrying the stigmata or wounds of Jesus Christ in the crucifixion and the miracles attributed to him.
One famous miracle by Padre Pio was the blind young girl, born without pupil in her eyes, whom he healed to see again by blessing her with the Sign of the Cross. Considering the accounts of healing miracles associated to the patron saint, Fr. Jojo Gonda celebrates a healing mass every 23rd day of the month at 9AM.
The church fortunately is located just 10 minutes away from the public market, making it easier to find.
